Unlike our last trip of barmy hot days and swimming in the
river we had truly Arctic weather. Cold rain and sea fog often
delayed the floatplanes take off times but we made up by fishing
later into the evenings. Fishing however was off the charts,
huge amounts of fresh sockeye and Chums. The king salmon were
also obliging the lads pumping out long lines with their Spey
rods covering an obscene amount of water were dually rewarded
with fresh kings up to 22 pounds.
The back waters on the Holitna provided great top water action
for trophy pike with monsters over 42 inches. Les Weil landed
a rare Shee fish - a member of the white fish family and often
referred to as the Artic Tarpon.
Lake trout and rainbows as always, were my favourite slashing
at swung mouse patterns on crystal clear creeks. The distance
to Alaska is intimidating but it is a spiritual fishing experience
that anyone who fishes needs to do before they die!
