The lake height was noticeably down from last year, the weather
very hot and settled apart from one exceptional desert windstorm
which kept everyone awake on night. Water clarity was good
and offered some good sight fishing possibilities. Although
there were no obscenely huge fish caught this year like the
67 pounder, several anglers landed fish up to 22 pounds on
fly.
As always there were a number of "near death experiences"
as they have become known, I personally was fighting a fish
of 5 pounds from the depths when it was inhaled by a fish
that Nubian guide Hani estimated at over 100 pounds, the fish
quickly felt the resistance of the line and spat the dishevelled
5 pounder before lurking back to the depths. Eric Croeser
on the other hands kept his wits when a fish his guide estimated
around 180 pounds inhaled his 7 pounder, being an ex rock
and surf angler he free spooled his reel allowing the fish
to take properly before striking and straight sticking his
rod - the monster proceeded to drag him down the rocks while
stripping metres of backing off before spitting the stone
dead 7 pounder out leaving Eric a quivering wreck.
This year's tiger fishing was also excellent Derrick Coetzee
landing a 12 pound racing snake!
