Alaska, Canada, Russia, Scotland, Argentina. These are all
destinations now being offered to South African flyfisherman.
The ability to Spey cast on these river systems is guaranteed
to improve any flyfishermans ability to cover water, control
long lengths of line, and in turn, catch more fish.
Developed on the mighty River Spey in Scotland, this style
of casting has revolutionised fishing on bigger river systems
worldwide. Mavungana Flyfishing are the only outfitter in
South Africa with three internationally certified speycasting
instructors. Derek Manson (REFFIS, STANNIC), Mark Taylor (REFFIS)
and Jonathan Boulton (REFFIS) have all worked abroad on river
systems primarily utilising the Spey Cast in its varied forms.
A weekend clinic will have you casting lengths of line you
thought not achievable. An accomplished spey caster can achieve
casts of up to 45 metres with relative ease. You will learn
the single and double spey cast, snap T and snake roll off
both shoulders.
Even if you dont have a big trip planned where you will need
this style of casting, you will enjoy an enlightening experience
and learn a lot about the dynamics of this cast. Spey casting,
and its sister casts are now used extensively by single handed
flyfisherman, to achieve casts, and reach parts of overhangs,
cast up against steep banks, and make trick casts to get your
fly where it needs to be. The advantage of the double handed
rod has unlimited potential, helping cover huge amounts of
water on the likes of the Zambezi River and casting over breakers
in the salt. Hosted one and two night clinics are available
on the lower Vaal River, just a 2 1/2 hour drive from Johannesburg.
All equipment is provided, meals are prepared by your instructors,
and fishing and casting is right on your doorstep.
