Back in the 'office' after what was simply another week of
pure bliss in a part of the world that is slowly and surely
stealing my fishing heart. A mixed group of Norwegians and
South Africans made the long journey to one of the most remote
fisheries you will ever visit, and all of us returned, unshaven,
healthy, and inspired by an experience that truly enriches
your soul.
Their season has been one of turbulence, turmoil, incessent
weather, and floods. That's always going to make fishing interesting.
Being late season though, we got it pretty good, and everyone
managed to get some great fish under their belts, and realise
their Steelhead dreams. One personal best on a fly rod, and
all the others first Steelhead on fly, meant spirits remained
high, even though they all worked hard for every fish. Casting
skagits with tips, and large flies, meant peoples casting
was also put to the test this time, but I am proud to say
all passed with flying colours. One angler who had never picked
up a spey rod before, was comfortbaly turning over perfect
lines, and covering every inch of water he was asked to. Fish
rewarded him, and he wont stop there. Our team had a blast
in camp as well, with our hosts and guides as always looking
after our every whim. Great food, hot coffee and riverside
lunches around the fire, BC proved once again what a magical
fishing and wilderness destination it is.
On the wild side, we experienced possibly the most unique
wildlife experience, at least of my lifetime. A pack of wolves,
around 13 of them, tracking a moose up river. Seeing that,
while on foot, that close, is an experience I will simply
never forget. My heart rate I wont forget either. In the end
their prey was twice the weight likely of all three of us
watching them from the 'relative' safety of a log crossing.
I have been home for 24 hours, and am already looking forward
to our return next year.
