Trout
Although not a reputable trout fishing destination,
South Africa has some excellent fishing amongst the most striking scenery
imaginable. Mpumalanga is very popular, easily accessible from the major
centres of Pretoria and Johannesburg, and the area offers superb stillwater
and river fishing with accommodation at some of the best hotels and country
lodges in the Republic. A popular itinerary is a couple of days troutfishing,
making ones way down the escarpment, finishing up at one of the luxury
game lodges bordering the world famous Kruger National Park, for Big Five
game viewing or hunting Safari.
Tigerfish
Arguably the world's most reputable freshwater gamefish,
combined fishing and gameviewing safaris are arranged into the Okavango
Delta or Zambezi Basin, depending on rainfall and the time of year.
Yellowfish
This reputable indigenous fish is readily taken on the fly. The Smallmouth
Yellowfish (Barbus aeneus) inhabits the Vaal and Orange system. The
Smallscale Yellowfish (Barbus polylepis)is resident in many Mpumalanga
waters and is frequently taken on the dry fly. Guided fishing packages
on these venues can be arranged. Mavungana has exclusive day fishing access
to 10km of the pristine upper Komati River. Here huge pods of smallmouth
and largemouth can be targeted. The largest caught so far being 3.4kg
while fish of twice that have been seen.
Saltwater
Guided tours inclusive of flight from the mainland, accommodation and
meals to the Mozambican Archipelago provide a phenomenal saltwater
flyfishing experience at the fraction of the cost of traditional destinations
such as Mexico and the Caribbean.
Also available
is excellent scuba diving opportunities with a highly qualified resident
dive master, as well as deep sea big game fishing.
