Just two hours from Johannesburg lies one of South Africa’s most iconic rivers - and we have a completely new way to experience it.

A first of a kind, bespoke drift flyfishing adventure. This guided experience unlocks nearly 20 km of prime fly water on one of the most productive parts of the Vaal.

Weekends are based in the heart of the Vredefort Dome — the world’s largest and oldest visible meteor impact site. This dramatic landscape, sculpted by ancient erosion and exposed crustal rock, forms a riverbed of boulders, glides, and monolithic formations. It’s a flyfisher’s dream: a dynamic environment teeming with endemic species like Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish (“smallies” and “largies”). Our primary targets are the region’s larger-than-average smallmouth yellowfish, with seasonal chances at trophy largemouths. For those seeking variety, shallow-water carp and catfish offer exciting alternatives.

Drawing on years of experience guiding the Orange River, we’ve crafted a truly unique drift experience on the Vaal using custom-designed inflatable drift boats. Each vessel features a center-mounted oar system, placing the guide mid-ship for optimal control and stability — allowing two anglers to fish comfortably and confidently. This drift unlocks a fresh perspective on a river cherished by South African fly anglers. Despite human activity along its banks, the Vaal still offers glimpses of reintroduced wildlife and endemic bird species. A pair of binoculars will enhance the experience — and for photography enthusiasts, the Vredefort Dome delivers some of South Africa’s most striking landscape compositions.

The heights of Summer see a lull in the trout fishing calendar and is the perfect time for targeting yellowfish in the shallow water. Using a variety of techniques, such as drifting tandem nymphs under an indicator, euro style nymphing and even a chance to tempt a fish up on a dry fly, this time of year offers a variety of fishing scenarios to keep you engaged throughout the drift. With access to some hard to get to spots on the Vaal river, there is always the chance that a well swung or slapped baitfish imitation can be eaten by the elusive Largemouth yellowfish.

Our drifts are structured as  three-day, two-night experience based at a renowned venue. Accommodation is in luxurious, safari style elevated riverside units with exceptional meals.
