FISHING FOR KING SALMON IN ALASKA
This is undoubtedly the quintessential fly fishing trip.
However, to plan a trip for the best salmon fishing in the world and not go to a lodge which offers the best salmon fishing in Alaska, at the best time for salmon fishing would be a sin.
We are hosting a group of anglers at the best fishing lodge in Alaska, the renowned Royal Coachman Lodge, on the Nuyakuk River. The lodge is situated in a remote section of the Wood-Tikchik State Park. And, we have secured THE prime weeks, the best time for salmon fishing in Alaska.
The rivers will be full of all 5 species of Salmon, Chinook, Coho, Chum, Pink and Sockeye. There are a multitude of clear creeks to sight fish for Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Grayling, as well as mountain lakes full of large Northern Pike and Lake Trout.
Wildlife is spectacular, but this week offers the best bear viewing on the planet, up to 20 bears catching salmon at any one set of falls.
We go where the fishing is the best.
Anglers fly out EVERY DAY in float planes and fish an area that is 250 miles across. With the combination of 25-30 fisheries and their local expertise, you will have the best fishing possible.
Price includes float plane transfer from Dillingham to the Lodge, all accommodation meals and fishing.
When everything is fishing well, you will almost have too many fishing options available. Imagine trying to decide whether to fish for 25 pound pike on the surface, fresh sea lice covered salmon near the coast, hiking small creeks for arctic char in the mountain lake streams, rainbows and dollies on the Nushagak, Agulapak, Kvichak, etc., or a mixed bag of grayling, lake trout and rainbows on our home river. That’s the dilemma our guests must face each day.
By hosting just 10 – 12 guests per week the Royal Coachman Lodge has the flexibility to go where the fishing is the best for what you want to fish for, not where a pre-determined schedule needs you to go.
The Nuyakuk is the lodges home river. It is on a grand-fathered property in the Wood Tikchik State Park. There are class 5 rapids above and below the lodge, and no roads within 60 miles. You can only get to the lodge by floatplane (not by boat or car). This means that, if the weather prohibits flying, you will still enjoy great fishing. It also means that when you are sitting at the fire pit looking over the river watching the sunset, you will never see another boat go by.

Brooke Falls is the finest bear viewing you will find away from your television screen. You might miss out on some fishing time, but it’s got to be done.

Over the last 25 years, I have been fortunate enough to have fished many exotic locations with Mavungana Flyfishing.
My first love is saltwater, but having reflected on the trips I have done, if I had I only one trip I could do again, it would have to be Alaska. The Royal Coachman is in a remote part of Alaska where you enter and leave the lodge every day in DeHavilland Beaver floatplanes. Watching massive moose and grizzly bears below each day brings on a new experience. You can catch pike in a lake in the mountains in 3 feet of water on surface flies, grayling outside the lodge, at least 4 different types of Salmon including fresh Salmon as they join the river system from the sea to spawn, and 3 trout species. The guides are 5 star as is everything else in the lodge. Food is as good as you will get anywhere - sadly the chef declined my job offer.
