Designed by Richard Wale, the Stella has proven an exceptionally effective pattern for topwater tiger fishing. It doesn't create a pop like a NYAP, but is most effective when fished like a slider or flipper. Once you've cast your fly out towards structure, give it a long draw to create a wake. You can either leave the fly static for a period of time between draws, or you can use a more constant retrieve depending on conditions. This pattern will be just as effective for bass as it will be for tigers. We would recommend fishing this fly on a longer leader when the sun is high, or in clearer water. In low light, or windy conditions cut back your leader to around 7-8ft, allowing you to stay in touch and turn over your line more effectively, helping with accuracy especially when fishing up against structure.
