Fish conservation, fashionable flies & bearded wisdom in Illovo

ONE OF OUR FAVOURITES AND THE LAST REMAINING SPOTS FOR THE YEAR

Our 17th year and so looking forward to getting back onto the water this Autumn, as it marks our 3rd year of our tagging and research program. Seven out of our 104 tagged tigerfish have been recaptured. One fish was recaptured in the gorge area, 24 km from its original tagging in the river mouth a year earlier. This first-of-its-kind program will go a long way to help us learn more and conserve these incredible fish. Eating swallows – whatever, that’s old news! We have an area named ‘ the Aviary’ where tigers hawk and smash low-flying birds.

COME AND JOIN US IN OUR DESERT PARADISE

Along with tagging and research, another fishery just as close to our hearts is the Lower Orange River. Having started a tagging program two years ago, the challenge of illegal gill netting very quickly came to light. Working closely with the Parks board, we have donated over R60K worth of equipment including Jim Green boots, technical packs, torches, sleeping bags, and ration packs to assist with overnight patrols and extended sting operations. The unit we support through the funds raised in our annual charity event has been rigorously pursuing this effort since December last year and has already made a noticeable, positive change, a fight we intend to keep tackling to ensure the protection of one of Southern Africa’s most unique fisheries. Enquire about remaining places for the year.

- DEADLY CLOUSERS SKINNY AND SPARSE -
THE LOOK FOR '24

Heading due south from the desert we land up on the coast where our new Fulling Mill Clousers are doing some serious damage. Their range of Clousers are sparsely tied with a touch of flash in grey, tan, olive, and chartreuse on Gamakatsu hooks.

They are used to target finicky sea trout in Scandinavian estuaries and the very challenging sea bass off the UK coast. They are cheeseburgers for Leeries and Grunter in our clear water estuary systems. These handsomely tied, privately educated flies from the UK belong in every serious salty fly fisherman’s.
