Vaal River Yellows - A new drift flyfishing experience

Just two hours from Johannesburg lies one of South Africa’s most iconic rivers - and we have a completely new way to experience it.

A first of a kind, bespoke drift flyfishing adventure. This guided experience unlocks nearly 20 km of prime fly water on one of the most productive parts of the Vaal. Guests enjoy expert guiding from purpose-built drift boats, and a relaxed riverside lodge environment.

At the heart of the experience is the dramatic landscape of the Vredefort Dome, the world’s largest and oldest visible meteor impact site. Over billions of years, erosion has exposed ancient rock formations that now shape the riverbed into a complex network of riffles, glides, boulders and deep pools. Perfect habitat for the stars of the show, the river’s endemic Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish.

The section of river is particularly famous for its strong populations of larger-than-average Smallmouths, with seasonal opportunities to pursue the Unicorn, the trophy Largemouth. What truly sets this trip apart is the drift boat experience.

Drawing inspiration from years of guiding on the Orange River, the team has introduced our specially designed inflatable drift boats that allow anglers to fish water that is rarely accessed by traditional wading. Each boat features a centre-mounted oar system that gives guides exceptional control, while allowing two anglers to keep moving over fresh water and hitting deep inaccessible pools and hidden braided shallows with comfort and ease.

The trip itself is structured as a three-day, two-night experience based at a renowned venue. Accommodation is in luxurious, safari style elevated riverside units - with exceptional meals served in a central dining area. We offer only a handful of prime Spring weekends, limited to 6 anglers per weekend.
